FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS AND HUBS

See General Warning, Section 1, Page 1-1.

FRONT WHEEL FREE PLAY INSPECTION

1. Chock rear wheels, loosen the front wheel lug nuts and lift the front of the vehicle with a chain hoist or
floor jack. See WARNING "Lift only one end..." in General Warning, Section 1, Page 1-2.
2. Place jack stands under the outer front frame I-beams and lower onto jack stands. See Figure 5-2,
Section 5, Page 5-3.

3. Rock the wheel and hub assembly back and forth on the spindle. If there is any observable movement
of the wheel and hub on the spindle, remove dust cap (1) and cotter pin (2) and then tighten the spindle
nut (3) until both bearings (5) fully seat in the bearing cups (7) (Figure 7-30, Page 7-19).
4. Loosen spindle nut one cotter pin position. If the hub does not turn freely, loosen spindle nut one more
cotter pin position.
5. Install a new cotter pin (2). If movement continues, replace the wheel bearings (5) as required.
6. Finger-tighten the wheel lug nuts and lower the vehicle. Tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to 55
ft-lb (74.6 N·m).
