Guardian Reader Battery Life and Storage Conditions
Date:
12 March 2007
During the process of re-calibrating 5-year old Guardian Readers, we have found instances of
discharged internal batteries. A discharged battery results in an error on startup and prevents
users from "time-stamping" the results from the Reader. Storage conditions can affect the life of
the internal battery.
Summary:
Guardian Readers contain a battery on the system board which keeps date and time information
when the Reader is not being powered. This internal clock battery is guaranteed by the
manufacturer with a 5-year shelf life. Given the low power draw of the Guardian Reader, we
would expect the battery would last at least one or two years longer than anticipated by the
battery manufacturer. However, this shelf life is affected by the storage conditions which the
Reader has experienced. Warmer storage conditions decrease the life of lithium-ion batteries.
Therefore if your Guardian Reader has been stored in a hot climate, often without benefit of air
conditioning, or regularly transported in hot vehicle compartments, even in moderate climates,
and your Reader is over 4 years old, you are at risk of experience premature internal battery
failure.
Recommendations:
1. If you haven't done so recently, we recommend that you start your Guardian Reader.
Look to see if you have the correct date and time. (You can set the date and time if you
have installed our Software Update 1.22. It can be obtained at Alexeter's website
www.alexeter.com
2. If you receive an error "RTC Battery Dead, Code 221", your battery has completely
discharged. The system battery must be replaced at the factory, it cannot be user-
serviced. We recommend that you contact Alexeter to schedule your Guardian Reader
for the 5-year maintenance and recertification. A new system battery will be installed as
part of this comprehensive re-calibration of the unit. After re-calibration, the Guardian
Reader is sent back to you with an additional one-year warranty.
3. If your battery is still working but your Guardian Reader has been often stored in hot
conditions, you may wish to preemptively perform the calibration ahead of its 5-year
schedule, contact Alexeter for details.
