Subject: Data Transfer from the Reader via USB Port
Date:
21 February 2002
Many new laptop computers do not have standard serial ports, especially laptops. All modern
PC's have USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports. You can transfer data from the Guardian Reader to
a USB-enabled computer with a third party item, commonly called a USB Serial Adapter.
Summary
The USB Serial Adapter effectively allows serial communication through any USB port on your
PC. We installed a Belkin USB Serial Adapter (Model Number F5U103). As we do not
recommend any particular manufacturer, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions with
whatever unit you purchase.
Solution
Here are the steps we followed to install a USB Serial Adapter on a Windows 2000 machine and
to transfer the data from the Guardian Reader:
1.
The USB device requires drivers to run, install the software provided with the unit.
2.
Determine what COM port the USB device is using. In Windows 2000, here's how to do it:
a.
Select "Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > System"
b.
Click on the Hardware Tab, then click on the "Device Manager" button.
c.
Expand "Ports (COM & LPT)", your port number will be listed.
3.
Start HyperTerminal. In Windows 2000, the path is:
"Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal"
4.
Name your session. "Guardian Data Transfer" is a good choice. Click 'OK"
5.
Select the correct COM port in the "Connect using:" list. Click 'OK"
6.
Set the port speed to 115,200. Click "OK"
7.
From the Transfer Menu, select "Capture Text".
8.
Name the file which will capture the data. "Guardian Data" is a good choice. Be sure to note
where the file is being saved.
9.
Start the file capture by pressing the "Start" butto n. The PC is now ready to accept data from the
Reader.
10. Initiate the data transfer from the Reader; from the Main Menu on the Reader select "Run Report".
11. Select "Transfer All Results".
12. Press the "Enter" key. All of the data in the Reader will appear in the HyperTerminal window.
13. Save the data for later use.
