System Memory

The sixteen SIMM sockets on the memory module (see Figure 1-6) can accom-
modate combinations of 16-, 32-, 64-, and 128-MB SIMMs up to a total
memory capacity of 2048 MB (2 GB). The standard main memory is 64 MB of
36-bit, 72-pin, fast page (60- or 70-ns), tin-lead alloy plated edge connector,
single- or double sided SIMMs.
The SIMMs must be installed in groups of four SIMMs of the same capacity.
All SIMMs in a bank must be identical. A bank consists of eight SIMMS.
SIMMs in different banks may differ in size. The SIMM sockets are labeled
"J1" through "J16." Slots J1 to J8 make up bank 1; slots J9 to J16 compose
bank 2.

For more detailed information about SIMM installation guidelines and samples
of SIMM configurations, see "Adding Memory" in Chapter 8, "Installing Sys-
tem Board Options," in the Dell PowerEdge 6100/200 System Installation and
Troubleshooting Guide.
See "SIMMs" in Chapter 4 for information on removing and replacing SIMMs.

Advanced Expansion Subsystem

The computer system offers advanced expansion subsystems that can support a
mixture of traditional EISA expansion cards, Plug and Play ISA expansion
cards, and PCI expansion cards. The system configuration utility, included with
the system, provides a means of avoiding resource conflicts that might arise
from such an arrangement.
After all legacy cards have been configured with the system configuration utility,
the system automatically assigns required memory space, IRQ lines, and DMA
channels to any installed Plug and Play ISA expansion cards and PCI expansion
cards the next time the system is rebooted. Chapter 5, "Using the System Con-
figuration Utility," in the Dell PowerEdge 6100/200 System User's Guide
describes the system configuration utility and provides instructions for using it
to configure the system.
