by a higher-level protocol or application, including frames not

All frames on the Token Ring network are received promiscuously by a
Token Ring port. A frame may be discarded, however, for the following
reasons:
There is no buffer space available
The frame is in error
Figure 10-1 shows the order in which these discard tests are made.
