Removing the propeller shaft
housing assembly
1. Remove the ring nut and claw washer.
See steps 1–3 in "Removing the propel-
ler shaft housing assembly" (8-15).
2. Remove the propeller shaft housing
assembly, key, and forward gear shims.

Disassembling the propeller shaft
housing assembly
• Use heat-resistant gloves. Otherwise,
burns could result.
• To prevent fires, remove any flammable
substances, such as gasoline and oil,
around the working area.
• Keep good ventilation while working.
1. Remove the dog clutch. See "Disassem-
bling the propeller shaft assembly" (8-
15).
2. Remove the O-ring "1".

3. Heat the area of the propeller shaft
housing "1" where the taper roller bearing
outer race is to be installed using a gas
torch, and then remove the forward gear
assembly "2".
When heating the propeller shaft housing,
heat the entire installation area evenly.
Otherwise, the propeller shaft housing
could be damaged.
4. Remove the propeller shaft "1", thrust
bearing "2", and propeller shaft shims "3".

5. Remove the oil seals and needle
bearing. See step 3 in "Disassembling
the propeller shaft housing assembly" (8-
16)

Disassembling the forward gear

1. Remove the taper roller bearing "1" and
thrust washer "2".
