Check the fluid level with the motorcycle in the upright
position. If the level is near the lower level mark (1),
add the recommended fluid.
If the level is at or below the lower level mark, check
the brake pads for wear (page 74).
Worn pads should be replaced. If the pads are not
worn, have the brake system inspected for leaks.
Add only DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid from a sealed
container.
Front brake
Other Checks
Make sure there are no fluid leaks. Check the hoses
and fittings for deterioration, cracks or looseness.
Replace them, if necessary.

Brakes are items of personal safety and they should
always be maintained properly adjusted. Measure the
free play at the tip of the brake lever (1). Free play is
the distance the lever moves before the brake starts
to engage.
The brake lever free play should be: 10 – 20 mm
(0.40 – 0.80 in)

Adjustment
1. Major adjustments should be made using the
adjusting nut (2) at the front wheel.
2. Turn the adjusting nut clockwise to decrease free
play and counterclockwise to increase it.
3. Apply the brake several times and check for free
wheel rotation when the lever is released.
