Installing Lightning Protection
For additional lightning protection, install gas discharge tubes with silicon avalanche
suppressors to ground (grounding rod or copper, cold water pipe) on each CO, DID, and OPX
trunk. This must be done external to the system. Each gas discharge tube is installed directly
between the service provider [network provider] 66-type block and the system CO/DID/OPX
input. This protection should provide energy absorption and filter low-level surge potentials.
In areas with frequent occurrences of lightning, check that the cable between the service
provider [network provider] 66-type [Krone] blocks and the gas discharge tubes is at least 75 ft
(22.5 m) long. The cable may be coiled as desired.

5000 Installation Manual – Issue 2.4, May 2008
Method C – T1/PRI Trunks Terminated on a 66-Type Block
On the MDF backboard, mount one eight-conductor modular jack [line jack unit]
assembly for each T1/PRI trunk termination on the service provider 66-type block(s).
See Figure 5-12 on
page 5-31
Connect T1 cable between the service provider [network provider] terminations and the
corresponding modular jack [line jack unit] assemblies as follows:
a. Terminate one end of a four-pair cable on each modular jack [line jack unit]
assembly. See Figure 5-11 on
b. Terminate the other end of the four-pair cable on the right side of the T1/PRI 66-type
terminal block.
If the service provider [network provider] termination is more than 2000 ft (600 m) from
the MDF, special T1 cable must be used. For cable specifications, see
shorter distances, two lengths of standard two-pair voice-frequency cable—one cable for
transmit and one cable for receive—may be used instead.
Plug one end of a four-pair, non-reversing [straight through], mod-to-mod line cord into
each modular jack [line jack unit] assembly, which was mounted in
of each line cord will later be plugged into the T1 jack on the corresponding T1M or T1M-
2 module. Make sure the connectors on the ends of each line cord are properly
attached. If any of the wires are cracked or broken, T1/PRI transmission problems can
occur.
