When to Populate the ARCserve Database
When to Populate the ARCserve Database
Configure the Agent to Protect VMs that Reside on a SAN
46 Agent for VMware Guide
You should populate the CA ARCserve Backup database using the ARCserve
VMware Configuration Tool or the ca_vcbpopulatedb command line utility
periodically to ensure that the CA ARCserve Backup database contains up-to-
date information about the VMs and volumes in an ESX Server system.
If you install CA ARCserve Backup on the backup proxy system, and the
backup proxy system is a primary server or member server, you can use the
Generic Job Scheduler to execute the ca_vcbpopulatedb utility periodically. For
more information about using the Generic Job Scheduler to schedule jobs, see
the Administration Guide.
In addition, you should populate the CA ARCserve Backup database
immediately after the following events occur:
■
You turned on VMs that were turned off the last time you populated the CA
ARCserve Backup database.
■
You added or removed new volumes from a Windows VM, and the
Windows VM was running the last time you populated the ARCserve
database.
■
You deleted or moved VMs from an ESX Server system.
Note: You do not need to repopulate the CA ARCserve Backup database if the
VMs are migrated from one ESX Server system to another system using
VMotion.
Important! You must perform the task that follows only if the VMs in your
environment are attached to a storage area network (SAN), and the backup
proxy system is not attached to the same SAN.
The CA ARCserve Backup Agent for VMware detects the configurations of the
VMs in your environment when you populate the CA ARCserve Backup
database using the ca_vcbpopulatedb Command Line Utility or the ARCserve
VMware Configuration Tool. However, if the VMs reside on a SAN and the
backup proxy system is not attached to the same SAN, you must perform the
following modifications to ensure that CA ARCserve Backup performs network-
based backups for those VMs and not SAN-based backups.
The VMDatastoreTypes.ini file resides on the proxy system. CA ARCserve
Backup creates this file (if it does not already exist) when you populate the CA
ARCserve Backup database using the ca_vcbpopulatedb command line utility
or the ARCserve VMware Configuration tool.
