    Chapter Introduction The Backup Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server is a “go-between” that allows BrightStor ARCserve Backup to back up and restore Exchange Server databases and database objects. The Backup Agent helps BrightStor ARCserve Backup retrieve and send data to and from the Exchange Server by interpreting and transmitting commands and data.

Choose Properties from the File menu and select the Permissions tab. 3. Select the Backup Agent Service Account name and click Add. Change permission to Service Account Admin.

    The BrightStor ARCserve Backup Browser The BrightStor ARCserve Backup Browser To enable the BrightStor ARCserve Backup Manager to browse the Exchange organization you must meet two minimum requirements: The Exchange Resource Kit must be installed on the machine on which the BrightStor ARCserve Backup Manager is running, if this machine does not have the Exchange Client or the Exchange Server installed.

    Backing Up To select an object for backing up, click the green box to the left of the object BrightStor name. (The box is filled when the object is selected.) Refer to the ARCserve Backup for Windows Administrator Guide for more information on selecting objects.

    Backing Up The actual files backed up depend on the type of backup option that you have selected. The Directory and Information Store files are located in the following subdirectories of the Microsoft Exchange Server home directory: \MDBDATA \DSADATA The Backup Agent Brick Level option allows you to back up individual mailboxes and folders.

    Backing Up Full with Differential—When using this strategy, a full backup is performed on Friday. On Monday, everything that has changed since Friday is backed up. On Tuesday, everything that has changed since Friday is backed up, and so on. The advantage to this strategy is that if there is a catastrophic system failure on Thursday, a full restore can be performed more quickly than with Incremental backups.

    Backing Up Exchange Mailbox/Folder Backup Options BrightStor ARCserve Backup offers the following backup options for backing up Microsoft Exchange mailboxes or folders: Normal (or full)—Backs up the entire contents of mailboxes and public folders, and keeps track of objects backed up. Incremental—Backs up the contents of mailboxes and public folders that have changed since the last normal or incremental backup.

    Backing Up Microsoft Information Store or Microsoft Site Replication Services or Microsoft Key Management Services—select these levels to back up the selected applications. Storage Groups or Individual Databases—select these levels to back up selected Storage Groups or individual databases in a Storage Group Microsoft Exchange Server—Brick Level—select this level to back up all mailboxes and public folders for a server.

    Backing Up \SRSDATA Each Storage Group has its own subdirectory for its database files. The databases selected for back up must be mounted. The actual files backed up depend on the objects and the options selected. The Backup Agent Brick Level option allows you to back up individual mailboxes and folders with the MAPI method (Messaging API).

Select the mailboxes (or Brick Level Backup folders within mailboxes) and public folders for backup that must be capable of individual, online restore without any downtime. Mailboxes, public folders, and other folders within them can be restored to the same or different mailbox located on the same or different Exchange Server.

    Backing Up Backup Options BrightStor ARCserve Backup and the Backup Agent provide a variety of backup options from which to choose, depending upon your backup needs. Exchange Database Backup Options BrightStor ARCserve Backup offers the following backup options for Microsoft Exchange database backups: Normal (or full)—Backs up entire databases, as well as the log files.

    Backing Up Files Backed Up for Each Option When a normal (full) backup is performed, all databases and log files are backed up. The backup operation then purges the committed log files it no longer needs from the Exchange Server. While the backup is taking place, new database .pat changes can occur, so a patch file ( ) is created to log these late changes.

Overwrite Original Message if Changed—This option restores messages only if they have changed since backup.
