8.4.1
Fitting rules for power supply units and fan
modules
In the minimum configuration, bays PSU 3, PSU 2 and PSU 6 are fitted with
power supply units. The remaining bays are free.
Depending on the system unit configuration, the remaining bays must be fitted
with further power supply units or with fan modules. Make sure you observe the
following order: PSU 5 – PSU 1 – PSU 4. The required number of power supply
units and fan modules depends on the number and types of installed server
blades, the available mains voltage and the redundant power supply
requirements.
The following 3 tables show the mutual dependencies. The tables reflect "quite
well-equipped" server blades, meaning that powerful CPUs and maximum
DIMM configuration are assumed. Finally, the power budget is automatically
assured by BX900 S1 server management. So there may be cases where more
servers than stated below can be operated, especially when less-powerful
CPUs are used or DIMM slots are not fully populated. The firmware version of
the management blade must be at least 4.50. The calculations assume that 6
connection blades (50W each) are installed.
Notes on tables
The first column shows the PSU configuration highlighting base and
redundant PSUs. E.g. 3+1 means there are 3 base PSUs and 1
redundant PSU.
The second column shows the number of additional rear fan units (fans).
The remaining columns show the different server blades. They indicate
the maximum count that can be operated with the PSU / fan configuration
given on the left. Not all configurations may make sense, recommended
ones are highlighted green.
Redundant configurations with 2 basic PSUs (2+1 and 2+2) make only
sense with 200 ... 240 VAC input voltage.
Example: A BX900 S1 system unit with 3 standard PSUs at 230 VAC and
one fan can support a maximum of 10 BX920 S2 server blades or 5
BX960 S1 server blades.
I
Basically, mixed configurations of blades are possible. Because of the
many possible combinations, extra calculations are required to show
configuration limits.
