Statement
TheCalifornia Air Resource Board(CARB),U.S.EPAadnB&Sare pleased to explainthe
Emissions ControlSystemWarrantyonyour smalloff-roadengine(SORE). I n Califor-
nai,newsmalloff-roadenginesmodelyear2006andlatermust bedesigned, b uilt and
equippedto meetthe State'sstrigentanti-smogstandards. E lsewhere in theUnitedStates,
newnon-road,spark-ignition enginescertifiedfor modelyear1997and latermust meet
similar standards setforth bythe U.S.EPA.B&Smust warrantthe emissionscontrol sys-
tem on yourenginefor the periodsof time listedbelow,providedtherehas beenno abuse,
neglect o r impropermaintenance of your smalleli-roadengine.
Your emissions control system includes parts such as the carburetor, air cleaner, ignition
system, fuel line, mufller and catalytic converter. Also included may be connectors and
other emissions related assemblies.
Wherea warrantable conditionexists,B&S will repairyour smalleli-roadengineat no
cost to you includingdiagnosis, p artsandlabor.
Briggs & Stratton Emissions Control Defects Warranty Coverage
Smalloff-road enginesare warrantedrelativeto emissionscontrol partsdefectsfor a
periodof two years,subjectto provisionssetforth below.If any coveredpart onyour
engineis defective,the part will be repairedor replacedby B&S.
Owner's Warranty Responsibility
As thesmalloff-roadengineowner, y ou are responsible for the performance of the required
maintenance listedinyour Operating and Maintenance Instructions.B&S recommends
thatyou retainallyour receiptscoveringmaintenance on yoursmalloff-roadengine,but
B&S cannotdenywarrantysolelyfor the lackof receipts or for your failureto ensurethe
performanceof all scheduled maintenance.
As thesmalloff-roadengineowner, y ou shouldhoweverbeawarethat B&Smay denyyou
warrantycoverage if your smalloff-roadengineor a part hasfaileddueto abuse,neglect,
impropermaintenance or unapproved modifications.
Youare responsible for presenting yoursmalloff-roadengineto anAuthorized B&S Service
Dealer as soonasa problemexists.The undisputedwarrantyrepairsshouldbecompleted
in a reasonable amountof time, notto exceed 30 days.

Theemissionswarrantyis a defects warranty.Defects arejudgedon normalengineperfor-
mance.Thewarrantyis not relatedto anin-useemissionstest.
The following are specificprovisions relativeto your EmissionsControl DefectsWarrantyCoverage. I t is in addition to the B&S enginewarrantyfor non-regulatedenginesfound
in the Operatingand MaintenanceInstructions.

control systemsparts) to the extent these partswere presenton the engine
purchased.

2. Lengthof Coverage
B&Swarrants to the initial owner and each subsequentpurchaserthat the Warranted 6.
Partsshallbe free from defectsin materialsand workmanshipwhich causedthe
failure o1the Warrantedpartsfor a periodo1two years from the datethe engineis
deliveredto a retail purchaser.
No Charge
Repairor replacementof any WarrantedPart will be performed at no chargeto the
owner,including diagnosticlabor which leadsto the determinationthat a War-
rantedPart is defecttive,if the diagnosticwork is performed at an AuthorizedB&S
ServiceDealeras listedin the "Yellow Pages"under "Engines,Gasoline,""Gasoline
Engines,""Lawn Mowers," or similar category.
ClaimsandCoverageExclusions
Warrantyclaims shallbe filed in accordancewith the provisionsof the B&S Engine
WarrantyPolicy.Warrantycoverageshall beexcludedfor failures of WarrantedParts
which are not original B&S parts or becauseof abuse, neglector improper main-
tenanceasset forth in the B&S EngineWarrantyPolicy.B&S is not liableto cover
failuresof WarrantedPartscausedbythe use of add-on, non-original,or modified
parts.
Maintenance
Any WarrantedPartwhich is not scheduledfor replacementas requiredmaintenance
or which is scheduledonly for regularinspectionto the effect of "repair or replaceas
necessary"shall bewarranted asto defectsfor the warranty period. Any Warranted
Part which is scheduledfor replacementasrequired maintenanceshall bewarranted
asto defectsonly for the periodof time up to the first scheduledreplacementfor
that part. Any replacementpartthat is equivalentin performanceand durability may
be used in the performanceof any maintenanceor repairs.The owner is responsible
for the performance of all requiredmaintenance,as definedin the B&S Operating
and MaintenanceInstructions.
Consequential C overage
Coveragehereundershallextend to the failure of any enginecomponentscausedby
the failure of any Warranted Partstill underwarranty.
Enginesthat are certifiedto meetthe CaliforniaAir ResourcesBoard(CARB)Emis-
sions Standardmust display information regardingthe EmissionsDurability period
and the Air Index. Bdggs & Stratton makesthis information availableto the con-
sumer on our emissions labels.The engine emissionslabel will indicate certification
information.
The Emissions DurabilityPeriod describesthe numberof hours of actualrunning
time for which the engineis certifiedto be emissions compliant,assuming proper
maintenancein accordancewiht the Operatingand MaintenanceInstructions. The
following categoriesare used:
Moderate:
Engineis certifiedto beemissions compliant for 125 hours o1actual runningtime.
Intermediate:
Engineis certifiedto beemissions compliant for 250 hours of actual runningtime.
Extended:
Engineis certifiedto be emissionscompliant for 500 hours of actual enginerunningtime.
Forexample,atypical walk-behindlawn mower is used 20 to 25 hoursper year.There-
fore, the Emissions DurabilityPeriodof an enginewith an intermediaterating would
equateto 10 to 12 years.
Briggs & Strattonenginesare certifiedto meetthe United StatesEnvironmentalProtec-
tion Agency(ESEPA) P hase2 emissions standards.ForPhase2 certifiedengines,the
EmissionsCompliancePeriodreferredto on the EmissionsCompliancelabel indicatesthe
number of operating hours for which the engine has beenshown to meet Federal e mis-
sions requirements.
Forengineslessthan 225 cc displacement.
CategoryC= 125 hours,CategoryB=250 hours,CategoryA= 500 hours
Forenginesof 225 cc or more displacement.
CategoryC= 250 hours,CategoryB=500 hours,CategoryA= 1000hours
