A varistor is used as the protective circuit for overcurrent.
Though varistors normally do not allow current to pass, they turn the CML
relay
ON when a high-voltage CI arrives from the telephone line, and so
the current is allowed to escape to the line to protect the circuit elements
from voltage rise.
