Installing a SAS drive tray

The blade server has two connectors on the system board for installing optional
small form factor (SFF) SAS hard disk drives or pin-compatible solid-state flash
drives. You must install a drive tray before you install a new drive in the blade
server. Depending on the blade server model, a drive tray might already be
installed.
The following illustration shows how to install a SAS drive tray in the blade server.
To install a drive tray, complete the following steps:
1. Read the safety information that begins on page "Safety" on page v and
"Installation guidelines" on page 17.
2. Shut down the operating system, turn off the blade server, and remove the
blade server from the BladeCenter unit. See "Removing the blade server from
the BladeCenter unit" on page 19 for instructions.
3. Carefully lay the blade server on a flat, static-protective surface.
4. Open the blade server cover (see "Opening the blade server cover" on page
20 for instructions).
5. If an MPE unit or an expansion unit is attached to the blade server, remove the
device (see "Removing an expansion unit" on page 21).
6. Locate the SAS connector that you will be using (see "Blade server
connectors" on page 14).
7. If you are installing a drive into SAS connector 1, complete the following steps:
a. If an expansion-card bracket is installed, remove the bracket (see
"Removing an expansion-card bracket" on page 38). Save the bracket and
screws in a safe place.
b. Remove the two screws near SAS connector 1 that secure the system
board to the blade. Save the screws in a safe place.
8. Orient the drive tray so that the blue lever on the tray is toward the middle and
front of the blade server.
