UNDERSTANDING YOUR RESULTS

Long-Term Diabetes Findings

In 1993 the National Institutes of
Health concluded an extensive long-
term study of people with Type 1 dia-
betes. This study, called the Diabetes
Control and Complications Trial,
found that by keeping your blood glu-
cose close to the levels of people
without diabetes, you can reduce the
risk of complications involving the
eyes, kidneys, and nervous system by
approximately 60%.

What This Means for You

Frequent blood glucose testing is the
best means you have for keeping track of
how well you are doing with the factors
that affect your diabetes—medication,
diet, exercise, and stress manage-
ment. Blood glucose test results can
also tell you whether your diabetes is
changing in ways that might require an
adjustment to your treatment plan.
Always consult your healthcare profes-
sional before making any adjustments.
