Replacing the Ulticontroller
For internal use only

Make sure the filament is removed, the Ultimaker is turned off and the power supply is disconnected before you start the replacement.
Tip: All orientations are noted as seen from the front of the printer
Note: These instructions are the same for the Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker 3 Extended.
Equipment/supplies needed
- 2.0 hex screwdriver
- Pliers
- 0.3 Torque screwdriver with 11 CR-V socket
Parts
- 1x 1994 - USB Ulticontroller board
Disassembly
- Move the Z stage up
- Place the print head in the front right corner.
- Manually move the build plate halfway up.

- Remove the knob front
- Insert a screwdriver into the hole in the back of the knob housing.
- Push firmly to pop the knob front out.

- Remove the knob housing
- Use pliers to turn the M7 nut (1354) counterclockwise until it is loose.

- Hold the M7 washer (1287) up with your fingernail to align it with the pin, as the transparent housing is moved forwards and out of the front panel.
- Loosen the Ulticontroller cover
- Gently place the Ultimaker 3 on its left side.
- Remove the two M3x12 bolts that hold the Ulticontroller cover.

- Remove the Ulticontroller cover
- First pull the back part of the cover away from the bottom panel, so the two small tabs come out of the panel.
- Then move the whole cover backwards.

- Remove the Ulticontroller board from the bottom panel
- Remove the four M3x12 bolts that secure the Ulticontroller board to the bottom panel.

- Carefully pull the Ulticontroller board and the display away from the front and bottom panel.

- Place it in front of you with the display facing down.
Note: Make sure not to bend the fragile flat cable of the display sideways.
- Disconnect the display
- Carefully open the clip that secures the display cable, using your fingernails on each side.
- Slide the display cable out of the connector.
Re-assembly
- Connect the display
- Take the new Ulticontroller board and place it in front of you in the same orientation.
- Slide the cable of the display into the connector.

- It should be inserted until the black part at the end of the cable is no longer visible while the clip is open.
- Close the clip at both sides.

- Connect the cables
- Connect the USB-Ulticontroller cable to the connector on the left.

- Connect the flatwire cables to EXP1 and EXP2.

- Put the Ulticontroller in position
- Carefully move the Ulticontroller towards its position on the bottom panel.
- Slide the display into the recess in the front panel.
- Align the threaded spacers on the Ulticontroller board with the holes for the bolts in the bottom panel.

- Attach the Ulticontroller board to the bottom panel
- Insert the four M3x12 bolts through the bottom panel from the inside of the printer.
- Use the 2.0 hex screwdriver to tighten them.

- Place the knob housing
- Place the transparent housing of the controller button in the round opening of the front panel.
- Make sure that the small hole is on the inside of the printer and the two tabs are parallel with the bottom panel.

- Secure the knob housing
- Place the M7 washer over the pin.

- Place the M7 nut over the washer and tighten it.

Tip: Ideally, it should be tightened at 0.3 Nm. If a torque screwdriver is not available, after tightening the nut by hand, use pliers to turn the nut 1/6 clockwise. The housing should not be able to move freely anymore.
- Place the knob front
- Push the button over the pin.
- Check if it turns smoothly. If this is not the case, the nut could be overtightened. It should be loosened to prevent damage to the Ulticontroller.

Note: Make sure the cables run neatly along the panels.
Note: The USB-Ulticontroller cable and camera cable should run through the corner next to each other with the double flat-wire covering them.
- Put the Ulticontroller cover back in place.
- Slide the front two tabs against the display, on each side of the display cable.
- Place the back two tabs in the slots of the bottom panel.
- Grab one side of the cover and pull it slightly backwards while pushing it towards the bottom panel, so that the tab clicks into the slot in the front panel.
- Repeat this for the other side.

Tip: Hold the cables in place to prevent them from getting stuck between the cover and the frame.
- Secure the Ulticontroller cover
- Secure the Ulticontroller cover to the bottom panel with the two M3x12 bolts and lock nuts.
Tip: Place a finger over the locknut while inserting the bolt from the inside of the printer. This ensures that it stays in place.
