Equipment/supplies needed

Tools

  • 2.0 hex screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • 0.3 Torque screwdriver with 11 CR-V socket

Parts

  • 1x 1994 - USB Ulticontroller board

Disassembly

  1. Move the Z stage up
    • Place the print head in the front right corner.
    • Manually move the build plate halfway up.
  2. Remove the knob front
    • Insert a screwdriver into the hole in the back of the knob housing.
    • Push firmly to pop the knob front out.
  3. Remove the knob housing
    • Use pliers to turn the M7 nut (1354) counterclockwise until it is loose.
    • Hold the M7 washer (1287) up with your fingernail to align it with the pin, as the transparent housing is moved forwards and out of the front panel.
  4. Loosen the Ulticontroller cover
    • Gently place the Ultimaker 3 on its left side.
    • Remove the two M3x12 bolts that hold the Ulticontroller cover.
  5. Remove the Ulticontroller cover
    • First pull the back part of the cover away from the bottom panel, so the two small tabs come out of the panel.
    • Then move the whole cover backwards.
  6. Remove the Ulticontroller board from the bottom panel
    • Remove the four M3x12 bolts that secure the Ulticontroller board to the bottom panel.
    • Carefully pull the Ulticontroller board and the display away from the front and bottom panel.
    • Place it in front of you with the display facing down.
warning Note: Make sure not to bend the fragile flat cable of the display sideways.
  7. Disconnect the display
    • Carefully open the clip that secures the display cable, using your fingernails on each side.
    • Slide the display cable out of the connector.

Re-assembly

  1. Connect the display
    • Take the new Ulticontroller board and place it in front of you in the same orientation.
    • Slide the cable of the display into the connector.
    • It should be inserted until the black part at the end of the cable is no longer visible while the clip is open.
    • Close the clip at both sides.
  2. Connect the cables
    • Connect the USB-Ulticontroller cable to the connector on the left.
    • Connect the flatwire cables to EXP1 and EXP2.
  3. Put the Ulticontroller in position
    • Carefully move the Ulticontroller towards its position on the bottom panel.
    • Slide the display into the recess in the front panel.
    • Align the threaded spacers on the Ulticontroller board with the holes for the bolts in the bottom panel.
      Put the Ulticontroller in position
  4. Attach the Ulticontroller board to the bottom panel
    • Insert the four M3x12 bolts through the bottom panel from the inside of the printer.
    • Use the 2.0 hex screwdriver to tighten them.
  5. Place the knob housing
    • Place the transparent housing of the controller button in the round opening of the front panel.
    • Make sure that the small hole is on the inside of the printer and the two tabs are parallel with the bottom panel.
  6. Secure the knob housing
    • Place the M7 washer over the pin.
    • Place the M7 nut over the washer and tighten it.

information Tip: Ideally, it should be tightened at 0.3 Nm. If a torque screwdriver is not available, after tightening the nut by hand, use pliers to turn the nut 1/6 clockwise. The housing should not be able to move freely anymore.
  7. Place the knob front
    • Push the button over the pin.
    • Check if it turns smoothly. If this is not the case, the nut could be overtightened. It should be loosened to prevent damage to the Ulticontroller.

warning Note: Make sure the cables run neatly along the panels.
warning Note: The USB-Ulticontroller cable and camera cable should run through the corner next to each other with the double flat-wire covering them.
  8. Put the Ulticontroller cover back in place.
    • Slide the front two tabs against the display, on each side of the display cable.
    • Place the back two tabs in the slots of the bottom panel.
    • Grab one side of the cover and pull it slightly backwards while pushing it towards the bottom panel, so that the tab clicks into the slot in the front panel.
    • Repeat this for the other side.

information Tip: Hold the cables in place to prevent them from getting stuck between the cover and the frame.
  9. Secure the Ulticontroller cover
    • Secure the Ulticontroller cover to the bottom panel with the two M3x12 bolts and lock nuts.

information Tip: Place a finger over the locknut while inserting the bolt from the inside of the printer. This ensures that it stays in place.
