Manage Routing Table Utility

The Manage Routing Table (MRT) Utility allows NMS users to edit and generate routing tables for
ACCULINK 700 Series multiplexers.
A routing table is maintained at each multiplexer node to specify an ordered set of links or logical
links that can be used to reach any specified destination node. The links specified are the next links
in the route to arrive at that destination, as opposed to the entire path to reach that destination. The
routing tables are used to determine how to route both user and supervisory data.
The routing table consists of one routing table entry per specified nodal destination (up to 249) in
the network. Each entry uses a comma-delimited list of link numbers (either physical or logical).
The MRT provides the same functions as the Generate Routing Tables (grt), Display Routing Table
(dsrt), and Change Routing Table (chrt) commands plus the following additional features.
The MRT generates routing tables based on information from the intended node and in the NMS
facility profiles, plus an algorithm based on the number of hops and links. If this method is not
desired, you can modify entries in an existing routing table with the MRT and download that newly
modified table to the intended node.

User Interface

The MRT user interface is mouse-driven, with the exception of entering text in the form of file
names, node identifiers, and link identifiers. The interface consists of the following elements:

Mouse Buttons

For a multi-button mouse, only the left-hand button is operative for the MRT. The MRT does not
respond to the right-hand button or the middle button on a three-button mouse. You only need to
point the cursor and click the mouse once for the MRT to respond to your request. Double-clicking
confuses the utility and should be avoided.

Enhanced protection for the network – the MRT has the same user permissions feature as
NMS commands; however, even after permission checking is passed, routing tables at nodes
cannot change until explicitly commanded to do so.
More powerful and flexible editing capabilities – enhancements include viewing more lines
of destination nodes and links at one time and changing routing tables based on hop counts
and maximum links per destination node.
Fallback mechanisms – the previous operational routing table can be saved in a disk file,
providing a reloadable version in case problems occur with the new routing table.
Ability to archive routing tables – routing tables can be saved in disk files at the NMS host,
allowing these files to be archived and retained for as long as desired.
