Configuring 724/735 Multiplexers

In order to communicate with the COMSPHERE 6800 Series NMS, the 724/735 multiplexer must
be connected to a 719 NETWORKER. Through the connected NETWORKER, 724/735 internal
menus can be accessed via the external systems port. For a 724/735 multiplexer to communicate
with a 719 NETWORKER, the multiplexer's control port must be configured as a supervisory port
(factory setting).
Each 724/735 multiplexer has one control port, which is a special communication port (EIA
RS-232). The factory setting for this control port is as a supervisory port. This supervisory port
setting lets you connect a terminal or personal computer (PC) to the multiplexer to access the
multiplexer's internal menus and to connect a 719 NETWORKER to the multiplexer in order to
access NMS.
However, before you connect the 719 NETWORKER to the multiplexer, verify that the settings are
correct for the supervisory port. The control port's configuration can be verified and changed (if
necessary) by selecting options from the internal multiplexer menus. To access these internal
menus, you must temporarily connect either a terminal or a PC to the multiplexer.

Connecting a Terminal or PC to the Multiplexer

For the configuration process, you can use either an asynchronous ASCII terminal or a PC. If you
use a PC, a VT-100 terminal emulation program must be installed and running before you can
configure the multiplexer.
When the configuration procedures are completed, the PC may be disconnected from the
multiplexer. At that point, the PC may also be used as a basic-feature workstation on the NMS.

Connecting an ASCII Terminal

Any ASCII terminal can be used to configure the multiplexers. Make sure the following
parameters are set on the terminal:
You need an EIA RS-232 (DB-25) cable to connect the terminal to the multiplexer(s).
To connect the ASCII terminal to the multiplexer, perform the following steps:
1. Connect one end of the cable to the modem port on the terminal.
2. Connect the other end of the cable to the control port on the multiplexer.
3. Turn on the terminal.
4. Turn on the multiplexer.
