Tran s mi ss ion
• With the engine in gear, gradua lly acceler-
ate and release the hand brake.
The engine can only be started wit h the se lec-
tor lever in P or N
~
page
76. At low ambient
temperatures
(14
°F
/-10
°C), it is only possi-
ble to start the engine with the selector lever
in
P.
When parking on level ground, it is sufficient
to place the selector lever in P. On a steeply
sloping road, you should first apply the park-
ing brake firmly and then place the selector
lever in P. This way, you do not overload the
pawl mechanism and it is eas ier to move the
selector lever out of P.
A
WARNING
- Never leave your vehicle with the eng ine
running while in gea r. If you must leave
your vehicle wit h the engine running, set
the parking bra ke and engage the park
lock.
- When t he engine is running and the
t ransmission is in gear (D, Sor
R)
or in
"tiptronic" mode, it is essent ial that you
stop the vehicle with the footbrake.
When idling, the transm ission of power
does not stop completely - the vehicle
"creeps".
- Do not accelerate when you change the
selector lever position with the vehicle
stationary and the engine running - risk
of an accident!
- Never place the selector lever in the R or
N position while the vehicle is moving -
risk of an accident!
- If you have to bring your vehicle to a stop
while on an incline, keep the foot brake
depressed all the way down so that the
vehicle does not star t to roll backward.
You should never hold the vehicle using
the clut ch if you are going to be stopped
on an incline. If you do, the clutch will
sta rt to slip when it overheats cause d by
the constant overload. This is dange rous
because if the vehicle starts to roll back-
ward, you could cause an accident. If the
clutch should start to slip, you will feel
the vehicle "jerk" and the selector lever
disp lay will start blinking.
- Before driving down a steep slope, re-
duce your speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or apply the bra ke
pedal too often or too long. Constant
braking causes the brakes to overheat
and substantially reduces braking per-
formance, increases braking distance or
causes complete fa ilure of the brake sys-
tem.
Hill Descent Assist
Applies to veh icles: w it h S tronic and Hill Descent Assist
Hill Descent Assist helps the driver when driv-
ing down inclines .
Hill Descent Assist is activated by pressing the
brake while descending when the se lector lev-
er is in
D/ S.
The S tro nic transm ission auto-
matically shifts down to a gear suitable for
t he incline. Hill Descent Assist attempts to
mainta in the current vehicle speed when the
braking occurs, as far as physical and techn i-
cal limits allow.
It
may be necessa ry to adjust
the speed using the brakes .
Hill Desce nt Assist switches off when the in-
cline levels out or when the gas pedal is press -
ed.
On vehicles with cruise control*
~
page
79,
Hill Desce nt Assist is also act ivated when t he
speed is set .
A
WARNING
~
Hill Descent Assist cannot overcome physi-
cal limitations, so it may not be possible to
maintain a constant vehicle speed under
all circumstances. Always be ready t o ap-
ply the brakes.
