This chapter is intended for trained emer-
gency crews and working personnel who
have the necessary tools and equ ipment to
perform these operations.
Starting
by pushing
or
towing

Note
Vehicle s with an automati c transmission
cannot be started by pushing or towing .
Starting
with
jumper
cables
If necessary, the engine can be started by
connecting it to the battery of another vehi-
cle.
If the engine should fail to start because of a
discha rged or wea k batte ry, the battery can be
connected to the battery of
another
veh icle,
using a
pair of jumper cables
to start the en-
g ine .
Jumper cables
Use
only
jumper cab les of sufficiently
largecross section
to safely carry the starter
cur rent. Refer to the manufacturer's
specifica-
ti ons.
Use on ly jumper cables which have
insulated
termina l clamps and are properly marked for
d istinction :
plus(+) cable
in most cases colo red
red
minu s( -) cable
in most cases colo red
black .

WARNING
Batt e ries contain e lect ricity, a cid, an d ga s.
Any of t hese can cause very seri ou s or fat al
inju ry. Follow the instructions below for
safe han dli ng of your ve hicle's battery.
- Always s hield yo ur eyes and avoid lean -
ing over the batte ry whenever possib le .
- A discharged battery can a lready freeze
at temperatures
just be low 32 °F (0 °C).
Before connect ing a ju mper cab le, the
frozen battery must be thawed com-
pletely, othe rwise it cou ld explode .
- Do not allow batte ry acid to contact eyes
or skin . Flus h a ny contacted a rea wit h
water immediat ely.
- Imp roper use of a booster battery to
st art a vehicle may cause an explosion.
- Vehicle batter ies generate explosive gas-
es . Keep sparks, flame and lighted ciga-
rettes away from ba tte ries .
- Do not try to jump start a ny ve hicle with
a low ac id leve l in the battery .
- The voltage of the booster batte ry m ust
a lso have a 12-Volt rat ing . The capacity
(Ah) of the booster batte ry should not be
lowe r than that of the discharged bat-
tery . Use of batt e ries of d iffe ren t voltage
or subs t anti ally diffe rent "Ah" rat ing
may cause an exp losion and person al in-
ju ry.
- Never charg e a frozen bat t e ry. Ga s t rap -
ped in t he ice may cause an explosion .
- Neve r charge o r use a batt e ry t hat has
been fro zen. The battery case may have
be weakened.
- Use of batt er ies of diff ere nt volta ge or
substan t ially differen t ca pa city (Ah) rat -
ing may cause an exp losion and injury.
The capac ity (Ah) of the booster battery
should not be lower than that of the dis-
charged batte ry.
- Before you check anything in the engine
compartment,
always read and heed a ll
