For the sake of the environment
Undep loyed airbag modu les and preten-
sioners might be classified as Perchl orate
Material -specia l handling may apply, see
www.dtsc.ca.gov/haza rdouswaste/per-
chlorate. When the vehicle or parts of th e
restraint system including airbag modules
safety belts with pretens ioners are scrap-
ped, all applicable laws and regulat ions
m ust be observed. Your authorized Aud i
dea le r is familiar wit h these requ irements
and we recommend that you have your
dea ler perform this service for you.
Other things that can affect Advanced
Airbag performance
Changing the vehicle's suspension system can
change the way that the Advanced Airbag Sys-
tem pe rforms in a crash. For example, using
tire-r im combination s not approved by Aud i,
lowering t he vehicle, changing t he stiffness of
the suspension, including the springs, s uspen-
sion struts, shock absorbers etc. can change
the forces that are measured by the airbag
sensors and sent to the electronic control
un it. Some suspension changes can, for exam-
ple, increase the force levels measured by the
sensors and make the airbag system deploy in
crashes in which it would not dep loy if the
changes had not been made . Other kinds of
cha nges may redu ce the force levels meas -
ured by the sensors and prevent t he a irbag
from deploying when it should .
The sensors in the safety belt buckle fo r t he
d river a nd front passe nger sea t tell the elec-
tronic control module if the safety belt is
latched or not . If the safety belt is being used,
the front airbag will dep loy at a slightly high-
er rate of vehicle deceleration than if the safe-
ty belt is not being used. Therefore, in a par-
ticular collision, it is poss ible that an airbag
will not deploy at a seating position where the
safety be lt is being used but will infla t e at the
position whe re the safety belt is not bei ng
used. It is important that nothi ng inte rfe re
with the safety belt buckles so t hat t he sen-
sors can send the correct info rmation about
safety belt use to the electronic control unit.
A
WARNING
-
Changing the vehicle's suspension includ-
ing use of unapproved tire-rim combina-
tions can change Advanced Airbag per-
formance and increase the risk of serious
personal injury in a crash .
- Never install suspension components
that do not have the same performance
charact e rist ics as the components origi-
na lly installed on your veh icle.
- Never use tir e-rim combinations that
have not been approved by Audi.
&_
WARNING
-
-
Items stored between the safety be lt
buckle and t he ce nte r console can cause
the sensors in the buck le to send t he
wrong informa t ion to the e lectronic con-
trol module and prevent the Advanced Air-
bag System from working properly.
- Always ma ke sure that not hing can inter -
fere with the safety belt buckles and that
they are not obstructed .
