- Never remove the front passenger or
dr iver seat from the vehicle.
- Never remove the upholstery from the
front passenger seat.
- Never disassemble or remove parts from
the seat or disconnect wires from it .
- Never carry sharp objects in your pockets
or place them on the seat . If the weight-
sensing mat in the passenger seat is
punctured it cannot work properly.
- Never carry things on your lap or carry
objects on the passenger seat. Such
items can increase the weight registered
by the weight-sens ing mat and send the
wrong information to the airbag control
unit.
- Never store items under the front pas-
senger seat. Parts of the Advanced Air-
bag System under the passenge r seat
cou ld be damaged, prevent ing them and
the airbag sys t em from wo rking proper -
ly.
- Never place seat covers or replacement
upholstery tha t have not been specifical-
ly approved by Audi on the fron t seats.
- Seat covers can prevent the Advan ced
Airbag System from recogn izing child re-
straints or occupants on the front pas-
senger seat and prevent the side airbag
in the seat backrest from deploy ing prop-
er ly.
- Never use cush ions, pillows, blankets or
similar items on the front passenger
seat. The add itiona l padd ing will prevent
the weig ht-sens ing mat in the seat from
accurately reg istering t he ch ild restra int
o r person on the seat and prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from function-
ing pro perly.
- If you must use a child restra int on t he
front passenger seat and the child re-
st ra int manufacturer 's inst ruct ions re-
quire t he use of a towel, foam cush ion or
something else to properly position the
child restraint, make certain that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes
on and stays on whenever the child re-

straint is installed on the front passen-
ger seat.
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and stay on, immed i-
ately insta ll child restraint in a rear seat-
ing position and have the airbag system
inspected by your Audi dealer.
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work togethe r
The front Advanced Airbag System and the
s ide a irbags supp lemen t the protec t ion of-
fered by the front t hree -point safety belts
with pretensioners and load limiters and the
adjustable head rest raints to help reduce the
risk of injury in a wide range of accident and
crash situations. Be sure to read the impor-
tant information about safety and heed the
WARNINGS in th is chapter .
Deployment of the Adv a need Airbag System
and the activation of the safety belt preten-
s ione rs depe nd on the deceleration measured
by
the crash sensors and reg istered
by
the
electron ic contro l unit. Crash seve rity dep e nds
o n speed and de ce le ration as we ll as the mass
and stiffness of the vehicle or objec t involved
in the crash.
When the electronic control unit registe rs a
low seve rity cras h and the safety belt is being
used, the a irbag w ill not dep loy. If t he safety
belt is not being used, t he first stage deploys,
followed by the second stage after a much lat -
er time in t he cras h sequence .
If t he ele ct ron ic cont ro l unit registers a crash
of medium seve rity, the first st age of t he air-
bag deploys fo llowed by the second stage at a
much later time in the crash sequence - re-
gard less of whether the safety belt is being
used or not . In higher sever ity crashes as reg-
istered by the electronic control unit, both the
first and second stages dep loy a lmost at the
same t ime.
On the passenger side, regardless of safety
belt use, the airbag w ill be turned off if the
weight on the passenger seat is less than the
amount programmed in the electronic control .,..
