Electronic
Stabilization
Control
(ESC)
Description
ESC helps to improve road holding and vehicle
dynamics to help reduce the probability of skid-
ding and loss of vehicle control.
It
works only
when the engine is runn ing. ESC detects certa in
difficult driving situations, including when the ve-
hicle is beginn ing to spin (yaw) out of control and
helps you to get the vehicle back under cont rol by
select ively braking the whee ls, and/or reducing
engine power and providing steering assistance
to help hold the vehicle on the driver's intended
course. The indicator li ght
DJ
in the instrument
cluster blinks when ESC is taking action to help
you control t he vehicle.
ESC has lim itations. It is important to remember
that ESC cannot overcome the laws of physics. It
will not always be able to help out under all con-
ditions you may come up against. For example,
ESC may not always be able to help you master
situations where there is a sudden change in the
coefficient of friction of the road surface. Whe n
there is a section of dry road t hat is sudden ly cov-
ered wi t h wat er, slush or snow, ESC cannot per-
form the same way it wou ld on the dry surface . If
the vehicle hydroplanes (rides on a cushion of wa-
ter instead of t he road surface), ESC wi ll not be
able to help you steer the vehicle because contact
with the pavement has been interrupted and the
vehicle cannot be braked or steered. During fast
cor nering, particula rly on w inding roads, ESC
cannot always deal as eff ect ively wit h diff icult
driving situat ions than at lower speeds.
Always adj ust your speed and dr iving style to
road, traffic and weather conditions. ESC cannot
override the vehicle's physical li mi t s, increase t he
available tract ion, or keep a vehicle on t he road if
road departure is a result of driver inatt enti on.
I nstead, ESC improves t he possibility of keeping

the vehicle unde r control and on t he road dur ing
extreme maneuvers by using the dr iver's stee ring
inputs to help keep the vehicle going in the in-
tended direction. If you are traveling at a speed
that causes you to run off the road before ESC
can provide any assistance, you may not experi-
ence the benefits of ESC.
ESC is switc hed on all the time. In certain situa-
tions when you need less tracti on, you can switch
off ASR by pressing the button

page 189,
fig . 178.
Be sure t o switch ASR on again when
you no longer need less traction.
The following systems are integrated in the ESC:
Anti -lock braking system (ABS)
ABS prevents t he whee ls from locki ng when brak-
ing . The vehicle can st ill be steered even during
hard braking. Apply steady pressure to the brake
pedal. Do not pump the pedal. A puls ing in the
brake pedal indicates that the system is acting to
stab ili ze the vehicle.
Brake assist system
The brake assist system can decrease braking dis-
tance. It increases braking power when the driver
presses the brake pedal quickly in emergency sit-
uat ions. You must press and hold the brake pedal
unt il the dangerous situat ion is over. In vehicles
with adaptive cruise contro l* , the brake assist
system is more sensitive if t he dista nce detected
to t he vehicle ahead is t oo small.
Anti-slip regulation (ASR)
ASR reduces engine power when the drive wheels
begin spin ning and adapts the force to the road
condit ions. This makes it easier to sta rt, acceler-
ate and dr ive up incl ines.
Electronic differential lock (EDL)
EDL applies t he brakes to a whee l that starts
spinning and tra nsfe rs the drive power to the
othe r drivi ng whee ls. This function is not availa-
ble at hig her speeds.
In extreme cases, EDL automatically switches off
to keep the brake on the braked whee l from over-
heat ing. The vehicle is st ill work ing correct ly. EDL ..,.
