DGPS capability
Maintaining your unit
951/952 Operator's Manual Rev. B
can use this large-scale map to see the part of the world not
covered by your high-resolution chart cartridge.
For the ultimate in GPS accuracy, the Northstar 951XD/952XD
features an internal DGPS (Differential GPS) receiver. This
advanced system gives you even greater accuracy than the
951X/952X by accepting GPS signal "corrections" from
shore-based transmitters called "beacons," and using them to
display position fixes as accurate as 1-3 meters. Or, you also
can connect your 951X/952X to any external source of DGPS
corrections that meets the SC-104 standard, such as the North-
star 8401 or 8800 differential receiver.
The following basic hints should help you maintain the unit's
optimum performance:
•
keep the cartridge access door closed at all times (unless
inserting or removing a chart cartridge) to prevent mois-
ture and dirt from entering the unit
•
don't change the cartridge when the unit is exposed to
water spray, rain, or moisture of any kind
•
wipe the rear connectors dry after each use or washing
•
keep the display lens free of fingerprints
•
avoid scratching the display lens
•
during extended periods of non-use, use the sunshield to
cover the unit
•
don't open the unit's case—there are no user-serviceable
parts inside
•
keep spare cartridges in a safe, watertight place where you
won't lose them
