Connecting for Configuration

If you are a PC user, you can configure the router through the FirstGear Router Configuration
Utility, an easy-to-use software program, or the menu-based Manager interface of your router.
For complete instructions for using FirstGear, refer to
Utility" on page 4-2.
If you are using a Macintosh or UNIX-based workstation, you can configure the router only by
using the built-in Manager interface. You can access the built-in Manager interface through a serial
port or Telnet on the LAN. In order to use Telnet, you must know the current IP address of the
router.

Connecting Through a Serial Port

You can access the built-in interface through a serial port by using a VT100 terminal or by using
a terminal-emulation program on your PC or workstation. If you are using Windows, for example,
Microsoft provides HyperTerminal with Windows 95 and Windows 98. Be sure to set the

program for VT100 emulation, including arrow keys.
Use the following serial port parameters:
• 9600 bps
• 8 data bits
• No parity
• 1 stop bit
• No flow control
When the serial connection has been established, strike any key. The router responds with a
"Password:" prompt. After the serial session opens, refer to
Configuration Method" on
Manager interface.
