Model RT328 ISDN Router. ™ The NETGEAR Model RT328 router provides connection for one or more PCs to the Internet or to the office over inexpensive ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) lines. The router operates at a speed of up to 512 kilobits per second (Kbps), or 128 Kbps without compression, and can download video clips, music, or high-resolution color graphics from the World Wide Web or other online services many times faster than an analog modem.

You can connect an analog telephone, fax, or modem to either of the two Phone ports on your Model RT328 router in the same way as a normal analog phone line. To use these devices, you must make sure that your ISDN line is provisioned by your telephone company for both data and voice calls.
Chapter 3 Configuring the Router Using FirstGear This chapter provides instructions for configuring the Model RT328 ISDN Router using the FirstGear configuration utility. These instructions are to be followed after you have installed and connected your router as instructed in Chapter 2, “Hardware...
Turn on the power to your router and wait at least one minute before starting FirstGear. Start the program by double-clicking the FirstGear icon. When launched, FirstGear searches the attached LAN for connected Model RT328 routers. The results of the search are shown in a Main Menu dialog box, as illustrated in Figure 3-1.
Selecting IP Addresses for Your Network In order for your PC to communicate with your Model RT328 router on the LAN, both devices must be assigned IP addresses with the same network address, as determined by the netmask.
Assigning an IP Address If your Model RT328 router is not configured, it does not have an IP address. You must assign one now, using the address determined in the previous section. If an IP address is shown, verify that it is the address you want the router to use.
Getting Started Using FirstGear for the Model RT328 ISDN Router Choosing Between Quick or Advanced Configuration After you have found and selected a router using FirstGear, you can select either the Quick Configuration procedure that leads you through various menus asking for basic information, or you can select the Advanced Configuration procedure.
Chapter 4 Quick Configuration for Internet Access This chapter provides instructions for configuring the Model RT328 ISDN Router using the Quick configuration option of the FirstGear configuration utility. This interview style quick procedure is intended for the simple application of allowing a workstation or small network to access an Internet service provider (ISP) using IP routing.
FirstGear detects the software for your region that is present in the Model RT328 router, and the correct version of this screen is displayed. Choose one of the following two sections, depending upon your region.
Getting Started Using FirstGear for the Model RT328 ISDN Router To configure the North American ISDN line information, follow these steps: Enter the directory numbers (DNs) assigned to your ISDN phone line. These numbers are the telephone number(s) assigned to your ISDN line by your telephone company.

Getting Started Using FirstGear for the Model RT328 ISDN Router To configure the DSS1 version of the ISDN line information screen, follow these steps: Enter the telephone number and subaddress assigned to the ISDN data call for the router in the ISDN Data & Subaddress fields.
Quick Configuration IP Information Screen To provide the information on this screen you need to know how your ISP assigns IP addresses. Refer to Chapter 1 of the Reference Guide for the Model RT328 ISDN Router for more information about IP addresses.
• Your IP address is dynamically assigned. You must use the NAT feature of your Model RT328 router. The Assigned IP Address field is disabled. After choosing and following one set of instructions, select the Next>> button at the bottom of the screen.
Getting Started Using FirstGear for the Model RT328 ISDN Router Enter the password (given to you by your ISP) in the Password field. Enter the password associated with the login name above. This field is case sensitive. Enter the primary telephone number of your ISP and an alternate number if applicable.
With the Advanced configuration procedure, you can set specific parameters rather than use the default preconfigured settings. This procedure requires knowledge of networking in order to set the proper parameters. Refer to Reference Guide for the Model RT328 ISDN Router for more detailed information about router configuration.
Router FirstGear to the router and reboots the router. Search for Router Click on menu item. Scans the local network for attached NETGEAR routers. Disconnect B1 Call Click on menu item. Forces the router to drop any current connection on B channel 1.
Getting Started Using FirstGear for the Model RT328 ISDN Router Advanced Router Configuration From the main menu, click on the Advanced button to use the advanced configuration procedure. The Advanced Router Configuration screen is displayed, as illustrated in Figure 5-1.

Getting Started Using FirstGear for the Model RT328 ISDN Router ISDN Menu Tab The ISDN menu tab sets the directory numbers (DN) of the router and other ISDN line configuration parameters, depending on the region. North America The switch type and service profile identifier numbers are set through the Switch Type field and Service Profile Identifier (SPID) numbers field on the ISDN menu tab for North America ISDN.

This field specifies the beginning address of a pool of addresses available to be assigned by the router to attached PCs. If you do not have a range of addresses assigned to you by an ISP or system administrator, NETGEAR recommends that you use addresses from the IETF-designated private addresses (for example, 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) and select NAT for ISP or Remote Node Connections.
Getting Started Using FirstGear for the Model RT328 ISDN Router ISP Menu Tab The ISP menu tab, as illustrated in Figure 5-5, contains the information for connecting to an Internet service provider (ISP). When your ISP path is configured properly, traffic to the ISP prompts the router to make a call automatically (Dial On Demand).

In North America, NETGEAR recommends that you enter the full long distance number (1 + the area code), even if it is a local call. Otherwise, in some areas, the call is placed as a 56K call.
Getting Started Using FirstGear for the Model RT328 ISDN Router Remote Node Menu Tab The Remote Node menu tab, as illustrated in Figure 5-6, contains the information for connecting to a remote node. A remote node is required for placing calls to or answering calls from a remote network.

Static routes are created automatically when you configure an ISP or remote node connection. Under normal circumstances, you do not need to configure additional static routes. For further information on routing, refer to Chapter 1 of Reference Guide for the Model RT328 ISDN Router.

Appendix A Configuring TCP/IP Before using FirstGear, you must first verify that a network adapter card is installed in your PC and that the TCP/IP component is installed and associated with your network adapter. If you are using a PC with Windows 3.1, you must have a TCP/IP application package such as NetManage Chameleon.
