This chapter describes how to prepare to connect your PCs to the Internet or a remote LAN using
the Model RT338 ISDN Router. Before configuring your router, you must perform the following
tasks:
• Order ISDN service from your phone company.
• Configure your PCs for using the TCP/IP networking protocol.
• Order Internet service from an Internet service provider (ISP).
Details of these tasks are given in the following sections.

ISDN Services Checklist

Contact the ISDN ordering center of your local phone company to order an ISDN Basic Rate
Interface (BRI) phone line. In most of North America, your telephone company can properly
provision your ISDN line when you provide them with an ISDN ordering code (IOC) or EZ-ISDN
code. The NETGEAR Model RT338 router supports the following ordering codes:
• IOC-S (basic voice and data service)
• IOC-U (basic voice and data plus supplemental voice services)
• EZ-ISDN-1 (basic voice and data plus supplemental voice services)
Note that the IOC-S capability package does not enable any supplemental voice services such as
call waiting. You must ask your ISDN service provider to enable them for you, and you must
inform the service provider if you want these services enabled for one of both of your ISDN
channels (directory numbers). Specifically, you need to have Additional Call Offering (ACO)
enabled in order to use call waiting or incoming call bumping. Incoming call bumping lets the
router receive a voice call when both ISDN channels are in use for a data call. One channel is
dropped to allow the incoming call, and the data rate is reduced during the call.
