Audio formats

So m e audio form ats used on discs are described belo w.
• Linear PCM
U nco m pressed digital audio, the sa m e form at used on
CDs and m ost studio m asters.
DVD VIDE O supports 2 channels at sa m pling rates of
48/96 kHz and quantization of 16/20/24 bits.
A udio CD/Video CD is limited to 2 channels at 44.1 kHz
at 16 bits.
• MPEG Multichannel
A surround audio form at w hich can handle the
aug m entative 7.1-channel form at (rare for ho m e use),
as w ell as 5.1-channel.
• Dolby Digital
A surround audio form at configured with six
channels. Because the "LFE (Lo w-Frequency Effect for
sub-w oofer, etc)." channel, one of the six channels, is
an auxiliary channel, this form at is called "5.1-channel
syste m."
N ot all Dolby Digital discs contain six (5.1) channel
inform ation.
• DTS (Digital Theater Systems)
A surround audio form at configured with six (5.1)
channel w hich is sa m e as Dolby Digital. Because the
co m pression ratio is lo w er than Dolby Digital, it
provides wider dyna mic range and better separation.

inform ation.
The associated indicator lights up in the display windo w
