MP3 disc playback

The unit can play back MP3 files on a personally
recorded CD-R/RW disc or co m m ercial CD. We refer to a
disc that contains MP3 file as an " MP3 disc" in this
m anual.
Though functions available with MP3 discs are limited,
operations for the available functions are similar to those
for A udio CD discs.
N ote that if a disc contains both of MP3 and JPEG files,
you can only play back files of the type selected by the
MP3/JPEG setting in the PICT URE preference display
(see page 51).
What is MP3?
" MP3" stands for " MPEG A udio Layer-3," and is a part
of the MPEG standard. It can store high quality stereo
audio using very little space by only saving the
audible sounds and discarding the sounds your ears
w on't pick up. A CD can store up to around 10 hours of
MP3 audio, w hich is nearly10 tim es as m uch as an
A udio CD.

About MP3 discs

O n an MP3 disc, each song is recorded as a file. Files are
so m etim es grouped into folders by artists, albu m,
category, etc. Folders can exist within other folders,
creating hierarchical layers of folders. If you are fa miliar
with personal co m puters, the hierarchical file and folder
structure of an MP3 disc will be fa miliar to you as w ell.
This unit sim plifies the hierarchical structure of a disc
and m anages files and folders using "Tracks" and
" Groups," in the follo wing m anner.
• Each file is regarded as a Track.
• A folder w hich has one or m ore files (Tracks) is
regarded as a Group.
• A folder w hich does not directly contain any files is
ignored.
• Files w hich do not belong to any folder are grouped
into " Group 1."
• The unit recognizes up to 150 Tracks per Group, and up
to 99 Groups per disc. It ignores those exceeding the
m axim u m nu m bers and cannot play the m back. If
there are files other than MP3 files, they also count
against the 150-file total.
