Parallel rod
Parallel rods, checks
WARNING!
If the parallel strut (tie bar) shows signs of damage, run
at reduced speed to harbor. The parallel strut is a vital
safety component, damage may effect steering char-
acteristics. In the worst case steering could be lost
altogether. Never align or weld a damaged parallel
strut. Please contact your nearest authorized Volvo
Penta workshop for assistance.
Check the parallel rods connecting the two stern drives
together, especially after running aground or striking
an underwater object.
If a parallel rod is bent, loose or damaged it must be
checked by your Volvo Penta workshop.
Parallel rod (hydraulic), adjustment
The parallel rod can be adjusted when the boat is in
the water or on land.
Boat in the water:
1 Remove the lock bolt (A). Loosen the adjuster bolt
(B) 1-2 turns.
2 With the engines running, turn the helm hard to one
side, until the helm pump reaches the stop position.
Both stern drives are then fully turned to one side.
3 Tighten the adjuster bolt (B), tightening torque 30
Nm (22 lbf.ft) securely. Install the lock bolt (A).
This procedure ensures the stern drives are in par-
allel to one another (straight ahead).
Boat ashore:
1 Remove the lock bolt (A). Loosen the adjuster bolt
(B) 1-2 turns.
2 Align the stern drives in the desired direction
(straight ahead recommended)
3 Tighten the adjuster bolt (B), tightening torque 30
Nm (22 lbf.ft) securely. Install the lock bolt (A).
