MAINTENANCE
Figure 6-8 Parallel/ Angular Alignment
For installation and maintenance of the drive cou-
pling, follow the steps explained below.
Disconnect all power at source, before attempting
maintenance or adjustments.
STEP 1 - MOUNT HUBS
After, carefully inspecting the hub bores and the
shafts for dirt and burrs, mount the motor hub and
the compressor hub on their respective shafts. It is
also necessary to check for a proper key fit. Place
the keys in position being sure that the end of the
key is flush with the end of the shaft. Secure the
compressor hub on the shaft with setscrews. Place
the element between the hubs and push the motor
40
hub to engage the element. After engaging the ele-
ment, set the motor hub for the proper gap as spec-
ified in
Table 6-1 Installation
motor hub with a setscrew. When the hub gap is
properly set, you will be able to move the element
in a slight back and forth motion (unless the cou-
pling is extremely out of alignment.
STEP 2 - ANGULAR ALIGNMENT
Clean fluid and dirt from the hubs in preparation for
angular alignment. Position the dial indicator on the
hubs as shown in Figure 6-8. Rotate both hubs
equally to check alignment.
STEP 3 - PARALLEL OFFSET ALIGNMENT
Reposition the dial indicator as shown in Figure 6-
8. Rotate both hubs equally to check for misalign-
ment. Parallel offset alignment is equal to 1/2 the
difference in indicator readings of 180º apart or the
gap between the hub and straight edge when the
alternate method is used. Vertical parallel offset is
corrected by the addition or removal of equal
amounts of shims under the motor feet while hori-
zontal parallel offset is corrected by sliding the
motor sideways.
Angular alignment is indicated by the difference in
indicator readings or by the difference in caliper
measurements (X) (A - B = X). Vertical angular
alignment is achieved by placing shims under the
front or rear motor feet while horizontal angular
alignment is achieved by sliding the motor side-
ways.
