During use

The RBD 5000 can be used for operations in locks. To do this,
before entering the lock, a locking mechanism should be fitted
to both release handles on the CO
weight release to prevent accidental release in the lock (see
Section 3.1.3 on Page15).
WARNING
!
The locking mechanisms are intended to prevent the
intentional release of the personal flotation device or
the loss of the weights due to becoming caught, e.g.
during operations in locks. Once the risk of accidental
release no longer exists, the release locking
mechanisms should be removed!
3.2.1

Inflating the flotation device

Inflation with compressed gas (buoyancy compensator)
Inflation is carried out via the medium-pressure connector
on the inflator hose that is connected to the compressed
gas cylinder via a pressure reducing valve, e.g. pressure
reducer. To do this, press the air inlet button.
Deflation is also carried out via the inflator hose (quick
venting by pulling on the hose or actuating the air outlet
button on the inflator head).
Inflation with breathing gas (buoyancy compensator)
Inflation takes place via the mouthpiece on the inflator
hose. Deflation is also carried out via the inflator hose
(quick venting by pulling on the hose or actuating the air
outlet button on the inflator head). When inflating, press the
air outlet button.

Activate the inflation devices with a strong pull on the
release handle (hard padding) on the right-hand side (as
worn).

using a common ripcord.
The venting is carried out via a rapid blow-off valve on the
lateral floats.
WARNING
!
Pull the release handle wide until both inflation devices
have been activated!
The lateral flotation devices must inflate below the
arms! The arms should be placed over the side
flotation devices.
3.2.2

Discarding the weight pack

In an emergency, the weight pack can be discarded from
the back section using a ripcord. To do this, forcefully pull
the release handle (soft padding) on the left-hand side (as
worn).

3.2.3

Discarding the transport plate

If the transport plate is mounted instead of the weight package,
this can also be discarded by pulling the handle (soft padding)
on the ripcord.
WARNING
!
If a mixed gas supply cylinder is fitted to the MOLLE
system, before discarding, the connection to the
rebreather unit must be disconnected by decoupling
the mixed gas supply pneumatics.
WARNING
!
Discarding the transport plate or the weight package is
no longer possible after activation of the inflation
devices for the emergency flotation device!
3.3

After use

3.3.1

General inspection

Basic inspection of the external condition of the RBD 5000.
In the case of tears or damage to the textile elements or
suspected unusual stress on the device, further usability
should be checked.
3.3.2

Cleaning/purging

Open the protective cover on the back and side flotation
devices and rinse the complete device thoroughly with
fresh water.
Remove any water from the buoyancy compensator via the
inflator hose.
If water has penetrated the buoyancy compensator: Fill
fresh water into the buoyancy compensator via the inflator,
shake several times and then remove from the system.
Allow the RBD 5000 to dry unfolded on a hanger.
3.3.3

Leak test

For the leak test, the RBD 5000 is submerged in a pool of water
after filling the flotation devices, in order to identify any leaks
via bubbles leaking out. It is not necessary to remove the
flotation devices.
Buoyancy compensator
1. Fill the buoyancy compensator with compressed gas via
the inflator hose until the pressure relief valve responds
(function check).
2. Where necessary, set the pressure to 100 mbar.
3. Leave the buoyancy compensator for 16 hours.
After 16 hours, the remaining pressure in the buoyancy
compensator should be at least 60 mbar.
