5: Chassis Maintenance
Replacing System Fans

Four fans provide cooling for the chassis. These fans circulate air through the chassis as a means
of lowering the chassis internal temperature. The system fans are hot-swappable (no need to power
down the system when replacing fans) and no tools are required for installation.
To replace a fan, do the following:
1.
Locate the failed fan.
If necessary, open the chassis while the power is running to determine which fan has failed
but never run the server for an extended period of time with the chassis cover open.
2. Remove the failed fan's power cord from the backplane.
3. Lift the fan housing up and out of the chassis as shown in
Figure 5-8
