Possible cause/consequence
You have opened the driver's door and the
automatic transmission is in position R,
N or D.
The compass* is malfunctioning.
The compass* is not calibrated.
The compass* is malfunctioning because
of exterior interference.
Your vehicle is outside the network pro-
vider transmitter/receiver range.
The transmission position cannot be
changed due to a malfunction.
Possible solution
Move the selector lever to P.

Engage the parking brake.

Have the compass* checked at a qualified spe-

cialist workshop.
Calibrate the compass* ( page 215).

As soon as the source of the interference has
been removed:
Turn the key to position 0 in the ignition lock

and remove it.
Wait until the total distance recorder has dis-

appeared from the multi-function display.
