b. Environmental Concerns
Temperature effects the output of the VLT. The chart above shows the 24-hour
average temperature and the maximum temperature which is 5°C (9°F) above the
average. Notice that the temperature over a 24-hour day is shown for a particular
VLT. At 6 in the morning the temp of the VLT rises quickly for argument sake, to
just below the maximum temp. It then stays there for the next 12 hours, until 1800
(6pm) at night. It then cools off to below average temp. This is an acceptable
environmental condition and no derating takes place. If however the average temp
is above the limit for a 24-hour period or the temp goes above max, then the VLT
must be derated.
To avoid derating the VLT, the only methods are to get a larger drive and run it at a
lower output say 80%, or incorporate mechanical cooling into the environment
where the VLT is located.
