A. Cutter Motor Mercury Switch malfunction. The Cutter Motor Mercury
Switch is located inside the case top secured to the right hand side near the
wiring harness. It is tucked up into the sound coat foam.
1. Ensure the switch is tied securely to the inside of the case and is parallel
with the case top.
2. Inspect the switch's leads for breaks and the connector to ensure it is
firmly in place.
3. Verify the switch operation by unplugging the switch's amp-style
connector and placing a jumper wire across the wiring harness receptacle.
If the motor runs when the Edger is cycled, replacement of Mercury
Switch is required.
NOTE: Bypassing the Mercury Switch is performed solely for diagnostic
purposes and is NOT intended for operation. SERIOUS INJURY could
result from operating the Edger in this manner.
B. Motor/Controller failure. Using a voltmeter verify the motor controller's
supply voltage.
1. Attach one lead of the meter to the white wire of the motor controller's amp-style
connector.
2. Attach the other lead to the black wire at the motor's amp-style connector.
3. Ensure the meter is set to the AC voltage scale. Close the case top and cycle the edger.
When cycled, 115 Volts AC (230 VAC where applicable) should be read by the
meter. If no voltage is present, check the wiring harness leads for breaks. If 115
Volts AC (230 VAC where applicable) is present at the connector, replacement of
cutter motor/controller is required. Follow the procedures on Page 50 for replacing
the cutter motor.

Motor is Noisy:

A. Cutter is unbalanced. Ensure that the insert is fully seated in the cutter
body. Remove the cutter body assembly and clean the motor shaft
thoroughly with alcohol or acetone.
B. Bearing failure. If the motor is making a grinding, rough sound, it is an
indication the bearings are going bad. Follow the procedures on Page 50
for replacing the cutter motor.
