Place the washer (4) on the starter
post
N
Press the spring clip (3) on to the
starter post and over the pegs of the
pawl with a screwdriver or suitable
pliers. The spring clip must point to
the left, in counterclockwise
direction
Tensioning the rewind spring
N
Make a loop in the unwound starter
rope and use it to turn the rope rotor
six full revolutions in the direction of
the arrow
N
Hold the rope rotor tight – pull out
the twisted rope and untangle it
N
Release the rope rotor
N
Slowly let go of the rope so that it
winds on to the rotor. The starter
grip must be drawn firmly into the
rope guide bush. If it tips sideways:
increase the spring tension by
another turn
N
It must be possible to turn the rope
rotor on another half-turn when the
rope has been drawn out
completely. If not, the spring has

been tensioned too tightly and may
break! Remove one turn of the rope
from the rotor
N
Refit the starter cover
Replacing a broken rewind spring
Version without a spring housing
fastened with screws
N
Remove the rope rotor as described
for "Replace torn starter rope"
The broken pieces of spring may
still be under tension and can
spring apart unexpectedly on
removal from the housing – risk
of injury! Wear a face shield and
protective gloves.

Remove the spring housing and
spring parts
N
Apply a few drops of resin-free oil to
the new replacement spring
N
Fit a new spring housing with the
bottom upwards at the recesses
(arrows)
N
Press the spring housing into the
starter cover
N
Refit the rope rotor
N
Tensioning the rewind spring
N
Refit the starter cover
N
If the spring has popped out of the
spring housing: Refit it, working
from the outside inwards
Version with a spring housing
fastened with screws
N
Remove the rope rotor as described
for "Replace torn starter rope"
The broken pieces of spring may
still be under tension and can

removal from the housing – risk

Remove the spring housing and
spring parts

Refit the starter cover
N
If the spring has popped out of the
spring housing: Refit it, working
from the outside inwards
