Lower the Z motor until the probe is just
above the sample.

Rotate the mirror to move the laser light until
it is visible on the probe.
9.
Loosen the set screws that are holding the
laser.
10.
Slide the laser in or out until it is focused.
11.
Tighten the set screws holding the laser in
place.
12.
Move the laser spot out to edge of the
cantilever.
13.
Release the set screws that hold the photo-
detector in place.
14.
Move the photo-detector in and out until the
T-B signal is zero. Tighten the set screws.
15.
Move the L-R signal to zero by adjusting the
detector translation thumb screws.
A.7 Grounding the LS-AFM
There are several grounding options for the LS-
AFM. The green ground wire should be used to
connect the stage with the Ebox. The probe and
sample are grounded by a grounding connector,
which should be attached to the Modes/IO connec-
tion on the back of the stage. A wire can be added
to the ground connector to receive signals from the
probe.
