Test the microscope and verify its operation.
a. Launch the Video View software (see section
3.3).
b. Turn on the light and adjust the intensity to its
mid-range.
c. Adjust the height of the zoom tube so that the
bottom of the tube is 115 mm from the surface
of the table.
d. Place a coin or other metal object under the objec-
tive. The light should be visible on the object.
e. On the zoom tube, turn the zoom adjustment
counter clockwise all the way, thus reducing the
magnification.
f. At this time, an image should be visible on the
computer screen; use the focus adjust on the
video microscope to sharpen the image.
g. Increase the magnification with the zoom tube
adjuster and increase the light intensity as
needed.
A.2.2. Inverted Optical Microscope
The inverted microscope for the LS-AFM can come
from two sources:

Another Manufacturer - Follow the manufac-
turer instructions for setting up the inverted
microscope. Remove the manufacturer's
sample plate and secure the LS-AFM
sample plate to the inverted microscope
stage.

AFMWorkshop Inverted Microscope - Fol-
low the instructions listed in Appendix J for
setting up the inverted microscope. After the
inverted microscope is prepared, remove
the sample plate and mount the LS-AFM
microscope stage. The sample plate is held

microscope and assure that the video microscope is working properly.
