Tape Head
Cleaning the tape heads
To keep your tape drive working well, you should
periodically clean the read/write head and the capstan.
You can clean the drive using one of two methods:
• You can use the Seagate-approved 3M DC2000
cleaning cartridge, Seagate P/N 10001794-001,
which is available through Seagate Express at
1-800-531-0968, or
• You can manually clean the drive head as follows:
Moisten a clean, lint-free swab in 90% isopropyl
alcohol. The swab should be wet but not dripping.
Hold the drive access door open and gently wipe the
tape head using an up-and-down motion. See figure
at upper left.
Use a second swab saturated in 90% isopropyl alcohol
to wipe the capstan. The capstan is the flat roller
just to the left of the tape head. Rotate the capstan
and clean its entire surface. Allow at least 3 minutes
for the alcohol to dry before using the drive.
