Front Screen Windows

Now is a good time to remove the front
windows. The scribed lines are good to work
to. Cut inside these with a Dremel cutting disc,
or sharp Razor saw. File the remaining material
to the marked lines. With the openings to size,
check the material thickness around the window
seat area and grind away any excess material
to leave a uniform thickness. Do not fit the
windows at this time as access to the installation
plate is better without the screens in.
The top hatch and hinged canopy section should
be completed now too. The top hatch fitting
system has been completed in the factory. Two
pegs at the rear and two M3 x 12 Allen screws
hold the front.
At each stage of the hinged canopy fitting,
screw the rear hatch in place to ensure
accurate fitting.
Remove the link section left between each hinge
cut-out and clean up the openings to match the
hinge ears on the canopy section.
The hinge is constructed from four plywood
parts and a brass tube. Cut out the wood parts
and clean up the edges ready for fitting. Each
pair of parts slide onto the brass hinge tube
before the fixed mounts are bonded to the rear
top hatch on the inside of each slot. The larger
triangular pivoting hinge blade features a
second hole which acts as an open stop to allow
the canopy to be left open. A single hatch catch
can be mounted horizontally just behind the lip
with a slot for the return lever.
The canopy hinge ears require slotting to allow
the two plywood hinge sections to seat fully.
Before mounting the canopy section cut the
glass areas out and finish ready for glazing. You
can even glaze half, which allows access to the
hinges through the other half.

With the hinges complete, the glazing can be
finished before moving onto the canopy locking
system. The canopy is large and requires a
secure fixing.
Two wire locking pins can be installed, running
from the canopy to the nose hatch area. This
gives a hidden system that is easily accessed.
Drill two holes 2.1mm, one either side 6mm in
from the front screen frame edge, just on to the
flat area. The actual drill angle is critical and can
be found by taping a rod on the outside of the
fuselage, angled down to approx 10mmbelow
the top line of the nose former. Drill angle can
be found by sighting this rod with the drill.
Before removing these guide rods, place the
canopy section in place and draw guide lines on
the canopy frame to follow later. The front of
the rod should pass through the nose leg former
in the nose hatch area to act as a front mount.
Sharpen the two 300mm long hatch pins and
grind a flat on either side, so that when twisted
it will mark the canopy frame. Tape the canopy
frame in position, ensuring the outer edge is
flush with the front screen frame. Twist the wire
to mark the frame and carefully remove the
canopy frame. Using the marked lines as a guide
to the angle, drill the canopy frame 2.1mm.
Open the holes in the front screen frame and
nose former to 3mm and insert the 3mm white
plastic guide tubes.
With the locking pins inserted from the canopy
area, bend the end inside the front hatch area
ninety degrees to allow easy operation.
