transm ission w ill shift to second gear and rem ain
in second until the v eh icle speed or the throttle are
changed to obtain fir s t gear operation in the same
manner as in D Range.

m ission warm and s e le c to r le v e r in " P "

engine o il le v e l is checked or as sp ecified in Section 0
when engine o il is changed.
C A UTIO N:
Since
the Turbo H yd ra-M atic 400
transm ission is
v e r y
s p e c ial precautions should be taken when check-
ing the o il le v e l, to insure against an o v e rfill.
T ran sm ission fluid should be changed as sp ecified in
Section 0.

Fluid Checking Procedure

Transmission a t O perating Tem perature
W ith the tran sm ission hot (after veh icle has been driven
at least 15 m ile s ), the fluid le v e l should be between the
" F U L L "
m ark and 1/4 inch below F U L L . The veh icle
should be le v e l with the engine idlin g and the tra n s­
m ission in P A R K .
Transmission at Room Tem perature (8 0 °F )
If the veh icle has not been driven su fficiently to bring
the transm ission up to operating tem perature, the fluid
le v e l should be checked as follow s:

L I Range position prevents the tran sm ission fro m
shifting out of fir s t gear.
It is v e r y important that any communication concerning
the Turbo H ydra-M atic 400 always contain the tran sm is­
sion s e r ia l and veh icle identification number and that a ll
transm ission parts returned to C h evrolet M otor D ivision
always be tagged with the transm ission s e r ia l number.
D ADJUSTMENTS

1. Apply the parking brake, put the s e le c to r le v e r in
P A R K , and start the engine. Note: Do Not Race the
Engine. Move the s e le c to r le v e r through each range.
2. Im m ediately check the fluid le v e l with the s e le c to r
le v e r in the P A R K position.

The fluid le v e l on the dipstick should be between the
"A D D " mark and 1/4 inch below.
3. If additional fluid is required, add sufficient fluid to
to b rin g the le v e l to 1/4 inch below the "A D D " m ark
on the dipstick.
If the transm ission fluid le v e l can be c o r re c tly estab­
lished at room tem perature
the transm ission reaches norm al operating tem perature,
the fluid le v e l w ill appear at the " F U L L "
fluid le v e l is set at 1/4 inch below the "A D D " m ark on
the dipstick to allow fo r expansion of the fluid which oc­
curs as the transm ission tem perature r is e s to its norm al
operating point of 180°F. DO N O T O V E R F IL L .
C A UTIO N:
Do
loss of fluid through the vent pipe m ight occur
as fluid heats up. If flu id is too low, esp ecia lly
when Cold, com plete loss of d rive may resu lt
which can cause transm ission failu re.
