S
SAVE
The process of writing C-900 data for an arrange-
ment, program, or backing sequence etc. to a floppy
disk is referred to as "saving" the data.
The save procedure is performed in the Data Save
page of Disk/Global mode.
☞Disk/Global mode
☞Reference Guide p.57
Unlike other types of data, backing sequence data is
erased from the C-900 memory when the power is
turned off. This means that if you create backing
sequence data on the C-900, you should be sure to
save the data to disk. It is also a good idea to make a
habit of periodically saving data to disk as you are
creating the data.
SCALE
In general, the sequence of notes C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C
is referred to as the scale, but on the C-900, you can
set the Disk/Global mode parameter Scale to use
not only the conventional equal tempered scale, but
also scales of ancient music or ethnic music. In
addition, you can adjust the pitch of each of the 12
notes in the octave over a range of ±50 cents. ☞Ref-
erence Guide p.67 "Page 12 User Scale"
SEQUENCER
A sequencer is a device (or a function within a
device) that stores the performance of a MIDI
instrument as a sequence of data indicating the
pitch, length, and velocity of notes, and plays back
this data on demand.
Sequencers perform a function somewhat similar to
a tape recorder, but instead of recording the
"sound," they digitally record the "performance."
This makes it possible to make very detailed
changes that would be difficult or impossible on a
tape recorder, such as modifying the pitch or timing
of an individual note, or re-recording or cutting and
replacing a specific portion of the data.
In Backing Sequence mode, the C-900 provides not
only tracks to record your performance, but also a
chord track to record and playback the chords of the
accompaniment, a control track that records panel
operations, an arrangement track, and 8 extra tracks
that can be used to temporarily hold portions of a
56
performance that you wish to switch between.
SONG PLAY
BACK.SEQ
When this key is pressed you will enter Song Play
mode.
Press this key when you wish to load and play Stan-
dard MIDI File (SMF) format song data directly
from disk.
Each time you press this key in Song Play mode,
you will alternate between selecting channels 1–8 or
channels 9–16 as the channels whose volume or
mute settings will be controlled by the VOLUME/
MUTE keys.
When the volume/mute settings for channels 9–16
are available, the LED will blink.

SONG PLAY MODE

The C-900 is able to directly load and playback
Standard MIDI File (SMF) format data from a
floppy disk.
If you have a SMF format data disk, you can insert
it into the C-900 and easily enjoy automatic play-
back.
SOUND HOLD/ ® ® ® ®
1. Sound hold
If this key and the Chord Hold have both been
pressed, the note (or chord) and bass note you press
in the left hand will continue to sound until the next
time the keyboard is pressed.
This differs from the case in which Chord Hold is
used alone in that the left hand sound and bass note
will sound even when arrangement play is stopped.
This can be very effective when you wish to play an
intro without rhythm before starting the song.
When arrangement play starts, the bass note will be
replaced by the automatic playback of the accompa-
niment track, but the left hand notes will continue
to sound. This is a useful way to add richness to
arrangement play.
The Disk/Global mode parameter Sound Hold
allows you to specify whether the keyboard notes
that you press will sound together with the bass
note, whether the notes you press will also be
chord-scanned and play the chord sound, or
whether the notes you press will play only the bass
sound.
☞Reference Guide p.65
When using this function, ...
1. Set Chord Scanning to LOWER.
2. If KBD2/LOWER is muted, simultaneously press
the ▲ and ▼ keys to cancel muting.
