V
VARIATION (1, 2, 3, 4)
1. Variation
These keys let you select 4 variations to the styles of
the C-900.
While an arrangement is playing, pressing one of
these keys to select a different variation will switch
playback to the selected variation either immedi-
ately, or from the next beat (depending on the type
of variation).
By setting the Fill parameter of Arrangement Play
mode, you can add variety to the development of
the song by causing a different variation to be
selected automatically after a Fill has been played.
☞Reference Guide p.8 "Variation Change"
The LED of the selected variation will continue
blinking until playback switches to that variation.
2. Step input
In step recording of Backing Sequence mode, you
can press these keys to directly specify the step
(note value). ☞Reference Guide p.21 "Page 2 Step
Recording"
VARIATION 1 = (whole note)
VARIATION 2 = (half note)
VARIATION 3 = (quarter note)
VARIATION 4 = (eighth note)
VOLUME/MUTE
Use these keys to adjust the volume or muting for
the program selected for each track (or channel, in
the case of Song Play mode). However in Backing
Sequence mode, volume and mute settings can be
made only if the Realtime Recording/Playback
page (the first page) is open.
For any track or channel, pressing the ▲ key will
raise the volume of the program, and pressing the
▼ key will lower the volume of the program. If you
continue to hold these keys, the value will change
continuously.
In addition, by simultaneously pressing both the ▲
and ▼ keys, you can toggle between muting and
unmuting the sound.
Change in the volume and play/muted status are
indicated in the LCD as numerical values and bar
graphs.

7. Functions, operations and terminology
When either a ▲ or ▼ key is pressed, the following
display will appear.

Volume
(bar graph)
The upper line of the display shows the arrange-
ment track or extra track (for backing sequence
mode) corresponding to the key that you pressed,
and the sound program that is assigned to that
track. However in Song Play mode, not the track,
but the MIDI channel and the sound program
assigned to that MIDI channel will be displayed.
The left side of the lower line shows the volume of
the channel as a number from 000 (minimum) to
127 (maximum) and as a small bar graph.
The right side of the lower line shows whether that
track can be played (PLAY) or is muted (----), and a
number indicating the octave setting. However if a
KBD1/UPPER or KBD2/LOWER key was pressed,
this area will indicate whether the right hand range
(UPPER) or the left hand range (LOWER) can be
played (instead of an indication of PLAY).
If no other keys are pressed, this display will return
to the normal display after approximately 7 sec-
onds.

Press this key to reply Yes to a confirmation mes-
sage in the LCD that asks you whether to execute
an operation or continue a process. In Backing
Sequence mode step recording, this key can be
pressed to finalize a chord you have input.
In displays that allow you to select a sub-page, you
can press this key to open the sub-page indicated by
the cursor. ☞p.35
