Cruise-O-Matic,
start
the
car
in
(2)
and then
shift to
(D)
.
Back-
ing
up
may
be
difficult,
so cqncentrate
on
keel2ing the
car
moving
forward.
"Rocking
"
the
car
works
like
a
pe
ndu-
hun, to
swin
g the
ca
r
off
a particular
slip-
pery
spot. Shift
rhythmically
between
re-
verse
and first
gear
.while
keeping
a
gentle
pressure
on the accelerator. With
Cruise-
D· Matie,
shift
between
reverse
and
(1).
If
you
are
still
stuck after
a
minute or
two
of
rocking,
have the
car
pulled
out
to
avoid
overheating
and possible
damage
to
the
tranmission.
CAUTION:
Avoid
overspeeding the
en-
gine and/or
excessively
spinning
the
rear
wheels.
A lso look around
for something
to p
ut
under
the
wheels to
roughen the
slippery
surface:
dry dirt
or
leaves; torn news-
papers; etc.
Snow tires
or skid
chains
help
avoid
getting
stuck in
soft
materials,
but
may
still
spin on
ice.
Drive
rs who
fre
-
quently
encounter
such
problems order
their
new
Falcons
equipped with
a
limited
slip
differential. Unlike the
conventional
rear
axle,
it
de
livers equal
power to
both
rear
wheels
for a
better
grip on the
road.
Hence
the
car
should pull
oul of
any
bad
spot
so
long
as
even
one
wheel
can main-
tain
traction.
