DRIVING
WITH
MANUAL TRANSMISSION
THREE SPEED
A
nonnal
"H" pattern
is
used
in
8hifting
the three speed standard transmission.
Make full use
of
the
gears.
When
it
is
necessary to reduce
speed
due
to
slowing
traffic,
turning corners
or
driving
u
p
steep
hills,
downshift to
a lower
gear
before the
engine
starts to
labor.
The
fully
synchro-
nized--Ford transmissions
_
make this .easy
to
aD.
Downshifts at the right time
(see
chart)
improve
both
fuel economy
and
performance,
and
provide
better
accelera-
tion
when
you
wish to
resume
speed. By
learning
the sports driving habit
of
using
th engine
as
a brake, you do
not
have to
use
the
brakes as much.
On
steep
down-
grades, downshifting the
tran81ll.lssion
to
second
gear
helps
to
maintain
a safe
speed
and
to
prolong brake life .
