STARTING THE ENGINE
WITH AN
AUTOMATIC
TRANSMIS·
SION-The transmission
selector lever
must
be
in
P "Park" or N "Neutral"
before
starter
will engage.
With a
Manual Transmission-Depress
the clutch
and
place
the
gearshift
lever
in
the
neutral position before engaging the
starter.
IGNITION SWITCH
ENGINE COLD-WEATHER COOL
Press
accelerator pedal
down
to
Ooor
and
release it
completely. Then
turn ignition
key to
"START."
(On cars with a 200
CID 6
cylinder engine,
press the accel-
e
rator down again
approximately
half-
way
and hold in
this
position
while turn-
ing
key.)
After starting the engine
and
allowing
it
to
run
for
a few
seconds.
depress
the
accelerator
pedal slightly
and
release
it
to
reduce
engine speed. On 8 C¥linder
C81'$,
if
the outside
temperature
IS
very
cold
(10"
or below) or the
vehicle
h
as
been idle several
days,
it
may be helpful
to
depress the
accelerator pedal 2
or
3
times
before attempting
to
start the en-
gine.
Your
engine
will idle
faster
than nor-
mal until it warms up
and
the
choke
is
fully
open.
ENGINE WARM
-
Press
accelerator
pedal
down approximately halfway and
hold
in
this position.
Do
not pump
the
pedal. Turn
the
ignition
key
to
"START"
until engine
is started, then
allow
engine
to operate
freely at
slightly
fa<:o/

than
idle speed.
Now release
p~a\
FLOODED ENGINE -Press accelerator
pedal
down to
floor and hold
in
this
posi-
tion.
Do not
pump
pedal.
Turn
ignition
key to
"START"
until
engine
is operat-
ing,
then
release
the
accele
rator pedal
gradually.

NORMAL TAPPET NOISE-
It
;s
normal
for
the
oil to
leak
down
from some
of the hy-
draulic
tappets
in
your
engine
during ex-
tended
shut-down
periods
(overnight)
.
As
a
result, these
tappets
may
clatter
fo
r
a
few seccnds after the
engine
starts
until
oil
press'ure
builds
.
