Simple inspection and service
4. Return the range selector lever to "P" position.
Turn the starter key to LOCK position and check
if the key can be removed from the key cylinder.
The steering wheel is a safety-critical part of the
vehicle. If an inspection reveals any abnormality,
contact an authorized dealer and have the abnor-
mality rectified before you again drive the vehicle.
Driving the vehicle with the abnormality unrectified
could result in a serious accident.

WARNING
Perform the checks in a safe place that pro-
vides good visibility all around. During the
checks, be sufficiently attentive to surround-
ing traffic conditions.
1 Steering wheel play
1. Make sure the parking brake is securely applied.
2. If your vehicle is equipped with a manual trans-
mission, make sure that the gearshift lever is in
the neutral position. If your vehicle is an auto-
matic transmission vehicle, make sure that the
range selector lever is in the "P" position.
3. With the engine running, check the steering
wheel play as follows:
From its straight-ahead (neutral) position, turn
the steering wheel clockwise and counterclock-

wise to the point where a resistance is first felt
for each direction, and measure the amount of
the steering wheel movement between these
points (steering wheel play). If the steering
wheel play is out of specification, contact an
authorized dealer.

NOTE:
The above check must be performed with the
engine running.
2 Steering wheel looseness
1. Try moving steering wheel up and down and
also right and left to check for excessive loose-
ness.
2. If anything abnormal is found, contact an autho-
rized dealer.

5 to 50 mm (0.2 to 1.97 in.) or less
