6. Connect the spark plug caps.

Checking the thermostat

1. Remove the thermostat cover 1 and
thermostat 2.
CAUTION:
Do not reuse the gasket 3, always
replace it with a new one.
2. Suspend the thermostat in a container of
water.
3. Place a thermometer in the water and
slowly heat the water.
4. Measure the thermostat valve opening a
at the specified water temperatures.
Replace the thermostat if out of specifi-
cation.

5. Install a new gasket, the thermostat 2,
and the thermostat cover 1, and then
tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
Thermostat cover bolt:
7 N·m (0.7 kgf·m, 5.2 ft·lb)

Checking the cooling water passage

1. Check the cooling water inlet covers 1
and cooling water inlets. Clean if
clogged.

2. Place the lower unit in water, and then
start the engine.
3. Check for water flow at the cooling water
pilot hole. If there is no water flow, check
the cooling water passages inside the
outboard motor.
