If a battery which differs from the specification is used, the electrical system may perform poorly or be overloaded, causing electrical system damage. 8 A battery cannot be connected to mod- els which do not have a rectifier or rec- tifier regulator.

    EM00113 TRIM TAB The trim tab should be adjusted so that the steering control can be turned to either the right or left by applying the same amount of force. An improperly adjusted trim tab may cause difficult steering. Always test run after the trim tab has been installed or replaced to be sure steering is correct.

    EMU00154 TILT LOCK MECHANISM (for Hydro- tilt model) Tilt-lock mechanism is used to prevent reverse thrust from the propeller lifting the outboard motor when reversing. To lock it, set the tilt-lock lever in the Lock position. To release it, place the tilt-lock lever in the Tilt position.

    EMU00175 INSTALLATION Incorrect engine height or obstructions to smooth water flow (such as the design or condition of the boat or accessories such as transom ladders/depth finder trans- ducers) can create airborne water spray while the boat is cruising.     EMU00224 BREAKING IN (RUNNING IN) ENGINE Your new engine requires a period of break-in (running-in) to allow mating sur- faces of moving parts to wear-in evenly. Correct break-in (running-in) will help ensure proper performance and longer engine life. Failure to follow the break-in (running-in) procedure may result in reduced engine life or even severe engine damage.

    While many additives available may reduce deposits, Yamaha recommends the use of Ring Free Fuel Additive, avail- able from your Yamaha dealer. Ring Free has repeatedly proven its ability to clean combustion deposits from inside the engine, notably the critical piston-ring- land area, and fuel system components.

    Do not attempt to diagnose any problems yourself. Instead, take the outboard motor to a Yamaha dealer. You should periodically remove and inspect the spark plug because heat and deposits will cause the spark plug to slowly break down and erode.
  • Page 82 When fitting the plug, always clean the gasket surface and use a new gasket. Wipe off any dirt from the threads and screw in the spark plug to the correct torque.
